Benefitting Safely and Effectively from Essential Oils

Some people LOVE Essential Oils. I was first turned on to EOs when I studied Aromatherapy in Massage School in 2004. The benefits, the results, the fragrance...I was amazed right away. I could totally see and feel the benefits of these earth derived oils.

Essential oils are concentrated forms of natural plants, flowers, roots, and herbs with powerful benefits to the body, mind, emotions, and spirit.  These God-given oils greatly enhance mood, and quality of life, and when used correctly are a valuable addition to our homes.  


Not all essential oils are created equally. When choosing a brand, you should look for high quality, pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. I love my Jordan Essentials oil droppers. I believe in, not only the quality of the oils, but also the entire company and product brigade I am comfortable using them and sharing them with complete confidence.


have you ever wondered the correct way to use essential oils?  Here are a few basic guidelines to help you maximize the effectiveness of your essential oils while still using them in a safe manor.


There are so many articles and so much information about Essential Oils and how to use them. Varying opinions will state that essential oils can be used AROMATICALLY (meaning you breathe the aroma), TOPICALLY (applied directly to the skin), or INTERNALLY (meaning you ingest them).  At Jordan Essentials, we highly recommend using your essential oils only aromatically or topically and NOT internally. Although all our essential oils are therapeutic-grade and pure, ingesting essential oils can be dangerous.  Applied topically in  a carrier oil/lotion combines safe delivery with effective absorption, while ingesting may result in tissue damage to the digestive tract.  Therefore, we do not recommend ingesting any essential oils even though some companies say it is safe to do so.


Here's more of a look into why we recommend NOT ingesting EOs:

Essential oils are highly concentrated forms of the plant they came from.  For example, it takes nearly 3,000 lemons to distill just over 2 pounds of lemon essential oil.  That equates to approximately 2 lemons in each drop of JE Lemon Essential Oil!  You wouldn't sit down and eat 2 whole lemons, right?!

The membranes of the mouth, esophagus, and stomach can easily be “burned” by some essential oils.  So why take the risk when it has been scientifically proven that applying an essential oil to the bottom of the feet (topically) or inhaling (aromatically) the components in the essential oil, reaches every cell in your body within 20 minutes of application or exposure?

So let’s look at the two ways we DO recommend to use essential oils...


TOPICALLY

One excellent way to enjoy your essential oils is to apply them to your skin.  The skin is the largest organ of the body, and the perfect way to apply essential oils directly to an area of concern.  When applying topically, always dilute the essential oil in a carrier such as a lotion or carrier oil like coconut oil or jojoba oil or even witch hazel which is what we use at Jordan Essentials in our sprays and spritzes.  This is where the magic and the fun comes in!  Essential oils combine beautifully with many of our products to synergistically blend the benefits of the essential oil with the qualities of our other products.  Some popular combinations with JE products include Unscented Magnesium Lotion, Unscented Magnesium Spray, Skin Relief Lotion, Dead Sea Salt Soak, Unscented Salt Scrub, Shampoos and Conditioners, and even our Toner Mist.  

When combining essential oils with other carriers, start with only a drop or two, and test a small area of skin for sensitivity before applying liberally.  For your convenience, we offer Roll On Essential Oils at JE, which are perfectly formulated for the optimum balance of essential oil and carrier oil.  All Roll On options are ready to use and apply directly to the skin as needed.


Key areas to apply essential oils on the body for maximum effectiveness include the bottoms of the feet, along the spine, on lymph areas, and pressure points, and other “thin skin” areas for maximum absorption.  Never apply essential oils, even diluted, to the sensitive areas around the eyes, in the ears, or genitals.  Most essential oils are not recommended topically for children under 5 years old (see JE guidelines in our current catalog) or for women who are pregnant or nursing.  Check with your doctor for recommendations, if you are having any hesitation, or if you are suffering from a chronic illness.  


AROMATICALLY

One of the best ways to enjoy the benefits of essential oils is aromatically.  When you breath them in, the tiny particles of the EOs are quickly and efficiently absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal passages.   When we breathe the delightful scents of the essential oils, our brain is activated and triggered, and the body naturally regulates the absorption of the components in the oils....aren’t our bodies incredible!? Aromatically is the safest of all the ways to use your essential oils.  


Aromatic techniques include:

Diffusing- Add a few drops of essential oil to a diffuser any time of the day and enjoy the aroma. 

( Note:  Due to the strong essential oils included in the Resistance Blend, limit diffusing time of this blend to about 30 minutes for maximum results.)


Palm- Place a drop of essential oil in the palm of your hand, rub your palms together, and cup your hands over your nose.  Breathe deeply.  This technique is especially helpful with Immune Blend when you feel sick, Headache Blend when you feel pain, Peppermint when you feel nauseous, and Eucalyptus when you need to breathe easier.


Shower- Add 2-3 drops of essential oil onto the floor of a hot shower, away from the water path, and breathe deeply while you shower.  This technique is wonderful with Eucalyptus or Resistance for respiratory discomfort or Lavender before bedtime.


Steam- Similar to the shower method, boil a pot of water and remove from the heat.  Add 2-3 drops of essential oil to the steaming water then breathe deeply from the steam.  Remember that steam is very hot, therefore exercise caution with this method to avoid burns.


Pillows and Bed Linens- Our convenient Essential Oil Sprays make it easy to add essential oil benefits to pillows, linens, clothing, and rooms as needed.  Peace, Sleep, or Lavender are excellent choices before bedtime.  Happiness, Resistance, or Immune are wonderful first thing in the morning or when feeling under the weather.


Laundry- Add 2-3 drops of essential oil on dryer balls, in homemade laundry soap, or use one of the Essential Oil Sprays to add fresh aroma to your laundry.



Essential oils can benefit us by boosting the immune system, reduce pain and inflammation, improve our moods, and make our environment more pleasant.  Experiment to find your favorite essential oils and your favorite ways to use them.
