Essential Oils and other Natural Products that are Safe for Your Pets!

I never really thought about essential oils and pet concerns until I started selling Jordan Essentials and offering a small collection of essential oils.

Essential Oils are often looked at as a natural way to eliminate chemicals in your home, and while replacing harsh chemicals is a great idea- it's still important to pay attention when it comes to essential oils and our furbabies. Most of the time, when considering pets and EOs, it’s important to realize that dilution is key; however knowing the properties and benefits of the oils is a consideration as well.

Incorporating EOs into can help improve your pet’s quality of life!

-Eliminates odors

-Calms and reduces anxiety

-Speeds up healing time

-Improves digestive health

-Repels ticks and fleas

-Soothes itchy skin

It's important to note that depending on the type of pet you have, certain oils can be harmful. I always recommend talking to your veterinarian before starting a new essential oil.

Once you know what oils are safe to use, there are certain measures to put in place so you don't overwhelm your pet:

- Ease your pet into an essential oil life. Maybe allow them to smell the oils you're using before application.

- When diffusing essential oils always give your pet an escape route in case they aren't a fan of the new smell. As a general rule of thumb, I don't diffuse in small rooms and especially not behind a closed door.

- Only introduce new essential oils when you're home to supervise your pet.

- Never apply essential oils directly on your pet's nose.

- Keep an eye out for skin irritation.

When using essential oils in a diffuser around pets, it is recommended to use a higher dilution rate. (i.e., 6 - 8 drops per 100 ml of oil/water is generally regarded as a safe dilution rate)

Generally, Diffusers do not need to operate for more than 10-15 minutes every 4 hours to be effective in aromatic benefits.

For pets that suffer separation anxiety: Blending of Frankincense & Lavender may be calming and grounding. Diffuse for 10 minutes approximately 30 minutes prior to leaving the pet for the best results.

Eucalyptus & Tea Tree, often found in many pet products, may be used topically in products under the supervision of a veterinarian.

As a general rule of tummy, essential oils should not be diffused for long periods of time in an enclosed room around a pet. Introducing essential oils to pets can be tricky, but with the proper precautions, you can improve your pet’s quality of life naturally!
